Recurrent Pregnancy Loss > Testing > Progesterone (Ovulation Induction)

There are several ways to evaluate for adequate progesterone production. We do not believe in endometrial biopsies., but serum levels of progesterone can be checked. However, in any individual with recurrent pregnancy loss, we feel that progesterone supplementation should be used. We currently prefer to use Prometrium, a pure progesterone pill, that we advise be used vaginally two to three times a day. Using Prometrium vaginally results in higher levels at the uterus, which is where we want it, and lower peripheral levels. Prometrium is continued until around ten weeks of pregnancy, at which time we can be certain the placenta is prodcuing more than enough progesterone to sustain the pregnancy. The use of progesterone during early pregnancy is perfectly safe - it is the same hormone the ovaries produce.
