Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis
Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is a technology that allows
assessment of the genetic composition of the embryo before it is
transferred to the uterus in an In Vitro Fertilization procedure.
After three days in the IVF lab, when the embryos are about six
to eight cells, a single cell (blastomere) is removed from each
embryo and analyzed. It has been shown many times that this does
not harm the embryo, nor impair its subsequent development. PGD
enables physicians to test for many conditions prior to embryo transfer
- these include chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome
or other chromosomal aneuploidies, inherited disorders such as cystic
fibrosis, Tay-Sachs, and muscular dystrophy and to improve the chances
of successful IVF by ensuring that the embryos transferred are gentically
normal. JFG has perfomred PGD for all of these indications - if
you feel you might benefit from PGD, please discuss this with your
physician.
